MEDICAL EDUCATION
We are an accredited training practice with NHS Education for Scotland. As a result, you may be offered an appointment with a GP Registrar. These doctors are fully qualified and are completing their specialist training to become GP’s. They will have had experience in several hospital specialties and will typically be with the practice for 6-12 month placements.
When you consult with a GP Registrar, there may be another GP present in the room who is supervising or assessing them. If they consult with you by themselves, they may ask to speak to a supervising GP to ensure that the care they provide meets local and national guidelines. This can sometimes take more time than a normal appointment, but additional time is provided to the Registrar to take account of this.
VIDEO CONSENT
We are committed to supporting the training of new GPs and also to maintaining and developing the skills of our existing GPs and other staff. As part of this training commitment, you may be asked permission for your consultation to be recorded. These recordings are to help our clinicians improve their consultation and communication skills.
Your consent will always be sought before any recording is undertaken and you are not under any obligation to give permission. Any examinations that require removal of clothing/your body to be exposed will not be recorded. The focus is on consultation and communication skills.
If you do agree to being recorded then you will be provided a written consent form which you would be asked to read and sign (if you remain happy for a recording to be made). At the conclusion of the consultation, you are again asked to sign the consent form to indicate that you remain happy for the recording to be used.
You are also able to withdraw your consent at any time following this (either verbally or in writing) which will result in the recording being permanently deleted.
The recording will only be used for teaching and training purposes. This is usually within the practice between trainer and trainee. Occasionally, teaching sessions are held with other training practices and these recordings may be used to ensure that the standards are being equally applied by all practices.
The recording will be deleted as soon as it has been reviewed and will not be kept for any more than three months.
Video recording is entirely optional and your choice. If you do not wish to be recorded, then the appointment will proceed as normal.

The role of a GP and how you access primary care has changed.
Your GP continues to provide general health advice and care, however, when you come in for an appointment, what you see is only a small part of practice life. There is a lot that takes place that you might not see from reception contacting patients, virtual appointments, medication reviews, patient letters, clinics, training and much more.
How can they help you?
If you feel like you need to contact your GP, please ensure that you’ve checked self-help guides online and / or spoken with your local pharmacist for advice on common ailments, their treatments and medication first.
This is particularly important with winter viruses at this time of year. Most cough, cold and flu symptoms result from common winter viruses. Viral infections do not respond to antibiotics, so rather than calling your GP, the best advice is to stay at home and take traditional over-the-counter remedies.
How can you make an appointment with a GP?
You can contact your GP by calling your practice’s reception. Please know that to ensure that you’re accessing the right care, GP receptionists will triage by asking some confidential questions. They’ll then signpost you to the person or service that best meets your needs. This may be your GP, or it could be one of the services mentioned below.
GPs now have access to support services that complement and support GP care including advanced nurse practitioners, pharmacists, physiotherapists, nurses managing vaccinations, and community links workers for social and wellbeing.
Before calling your GP, you’re encouraged to seek help via online resources as your symptoms could be treated at home. It is important that you use the resources available when you have a health issue. Think about the symptom finder of NHS Inform, use the NHS 24 app, and in addition there are other people around to seek help from.
You have a range of support services available that complement and enhance GP care, including advanced nurse practitioners, pharmacists, physiotherapists, vaccination nurses, and community links workers who focus on social and wellbeing support. Additionally, you can access services like dentists and optometrists in your local area.
These professionals are part of your primary care team, serving as your front door to healthcare.
Medication review with the GP?
If you require a medication review or get a note on your prescription to make a medication review appointment, please phone after 11 am to make a routine telephone appointment to discuss.
